Welcome to the New Light for Life Blog!
Hello, everyone, I’m Tom and welcome to the new blog we created specifically for the Light for Life UC3.400 Flashlight. Over the next few weeks I want to use this blog as a way of communicating with everyone about the flashlight and the technology behind it.
Before I do that I want to tell a little about myself and how I got started with this project - After 10 years in Sales and Marketing with one of the most recognized brands in the world, I met Dan Costa, CEO of 5.11 Tactical. He told me about a product that 5.11 was developing that would “change the game” in it’s category and invited me to join the team to help to bring the product to market and here I am!
Feel free to ask anything within the comments and I can not wait to share more information about this exciting project.
One Lasting Thought:
It’s one thing to look at a product and make some improvements to what the competitors are doing. It is another, to have a technology, that exceeds what anyone thought was possible. This flashlight does that.

What sort of switch? Momentary, strobe, etc. How will they work? Can a traffic wand cone fit on one?
Kent on October 12th, 2008Quick question - the only thing not covered in sufficient detail in the brochures, etc. is the following: how long will the flashlight hold a charge when not in use? A few hours? Days? Weeks? A year?
Thanks!
James Beatty on October 16th, 2008I just Pre-Ordered a light, When will they come in? Are these lights intrinsically safe? And Can they be used in IDLH atmospheres? How well do the lights work in smoke filled atmospheres?
Officer V. Vacirca III, Mercer County Sheriff's Office, New Jersey on October 17th, 2008Why not have a small ultra-capacitor backup to extend time rather than batteries which you have done away with on this product? Cost? I believe this is the most advanced product of its time. Just when we thought the LED had overtaken the regular flashlight, here comes the 5.11 LFL!!!
David Bilbo on October 25th, 2008Thank You 5.11
It is quite common that my departments SL-20x’s are used in the capacity of an “emergency impact” weapon during fights. Will this flashlight be capable of and be able to withstand impact type strikes if the need so exists?
Matthew on November 3rd, 2008I might be missing it, but I do not see anything about the illumination power of this flashlight. What is the lumens, or candlelight power of this flashlight. thank you
Evan on November 4th, 2008nevermind, i see that its 270 lumens. this is a little weaker than my ultrastinger (295), but how can you compare the 8 - 10 hour charge time to 90 sec.
Evan on November 5th, 2008Hey Evan,
Thanks for your comments. I am not totally sure I understand your question but our flashlights will only take 90 seconds to fully recharge. The page I have included below will explain more in depth all the information regarding our flashlights.

bgrogers20 on November 5th, 2008I recently saw the L4L at the 511 booth of the IACP conference in San Diego (11/10/2008). I was surprised as to how light it weighed. I am curious as to how much abuse the L4L can take. In the brochure, it indicated it was impact resistant. What does that translate to? Has it been tested in a lab to see if it still functions after being dropped from 5,10 or 20 feet?
Glenn on November 15th, 2008What will the physical dimensions of this light be?
Jordan Schooler on November 21st, 2008The product lit. mentioned the L4L is water-resistant. Does this mean it would be ok to use in a rainstorm? Is it possible to use the L4L underwater?
Thanks!
Thomas on November 22nd, 2008Will this be available in Canada or just the United States? Want to know ASAP please.
james on November 22nd, 2008I have not been able to find how much this light weighs? It looks big and heavy. I see the box size, but not the light.
Wayne Nicholson on November 25th, 2008Could we get a comparison against one of the work horses of LE, the SL-20x?
Wayne Nicholson on November 25th, 2008Thanks for being so candid and specific with your responses!
I’m wondering how the ultracapacitors function in cold temperatures. What is the minimum operating temperature? Would extremely cold temperatures affect any of the other electronics or LEDs?
Also, Ditto on Vacirca’s question about whether it is “intrinsically safe”.
Will Laxson on December 11th, 2008Is this flashlight water resistant/proof? Is it safe to use in heavy rains? If some how water was to get inside, would it explode?
Wayne Nicholson on December 21st, 2008As a sales person for one of 5.11’s top 5 dealers, I have held this light and it is everything they claim! Can’t wait to get mine. Thanks to 5.11 for continuing to bring innovative and quality product to my end users! Last we heard was a late May ship date, so be patient… they’re coming!~
