Light for Life Program

I havent really wrote much about the Light for Life Foundation that we set up, however that changes today!

For those of you who do not know about our Light for Life program, we set it up earlier in the year as a way of giving back to our communities. We also partnered up with D.A.R.E for a special contest that selects students in different parts of the country and provides them a couple days of fun and relaxation in Montana. These students of D.A.R.E will get to enjoy:

- Round-trip airfare, ground travel and a three-day, two-night stay in the luxurious 5.11 Tactical® lodge outside of Billings, Montana, near the Big Horn River.
- A visit to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, the site of Custer’s Last Stand.
- A guided fishing trip down the Big Horn River.
- Wilderness adventures including a hike with 5.11’s new Light for Life™ UC3.400™ Flashlight.
- Food, fun activities and a chance to make new friends.

Who wouldnt want to go! Im jealous!!

Anyway, the mission of the 5.11 Light for Life program is to promote the health and well being of deserving children and their families by providing outstanding outdoor recreational activities, educational opportunities, scholarships and other beneficial programs in conjunction with Law Enforcement organizations with the same mission.

I wanted to pass this along because it is something that makes us all proud at 5.11 Tactical!

Long-Lasting Power

This next question comes to us from Mike. Mike asks “I may have missed it in the literature, but how long does the charge last? I know it only takes 90 seconds to recharge.”

In just 90 seconds, your Light for Life™ UC3.400™ will be fully charged and ready to produce another 120 minutes of light (60 minutes at 90 lumens and 60 minutes in reserve that starts at 25 lumens and cycles down to 15 lumens.

I hope this answers you question Mike. Let us know if you have any more questions.

Lumens, Watts, and Candlepower… oh my!

Okay, I know everyone has heard of these terms, however most times these terms are confused in normal everyday conversation.  I am going to attempt to explain them to you, our readers.

What is a lumen?

A lumen is a unit of measurement of light.   More importantly, a lumen is a way of measuring how much light gets to what you want to light.  For example, if you shine a flashlight at a wall 20 feet away, how much light actually hits the wall?  The more lumens the more light the wall will receive…

What is candlepower?

Candlepower is the measurement of light taken from the source or the amount of light the bulb produces.

Finally, what is a watt?

A watt, in simple terms, is the amount of energy used by the bulb.

These terms are important, especially when you buy a flashlight because it can actually save your life.  Using the definition above wouldn’t you rather have a 270 lumen flashlight as opposed to a 200 lumen flashlight?  I don’t know about you, but those extra 70 lumens can help you identify a potential life threatening situation faster.

What do you think?

Important Update

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to keep everybody informed that we have received an incredibly positive and enthusiastic response for our new Light for Life UC3.400 Flashlight.  In fact, we have had to dramatically upgrade our production capabilities to meet the overwhelming demand and ensure consistent supply.

Producing such large numbers of Light for Life UC3.400 Flashlights shifts our first anticipated delivery date to mid-spring (late April).  Trust me, this brief delay will be worth the wait as this product will revolutionize the tactical lighting industry. Best of all, this enhanced production system will be able to manufacture more Flashlights for the future.

Finally, we are also excited to report that the Light for Life Flashlight will be complaint to many regulatory certifications, including ETL, FCC, CE, ANSI/UL and more.

Thanks,
Tom

What Happens if Dropped?

This next question comes from Greg, he asks…

I recently saw the L4L at the 511 booth of the IACP conference in San Diego (11/10/2008). I was surprised as to how light it weighed. I am curious as to how much abuse the L4L can take. In the brochure, it indicated it was impact resistant. What does that translate to? Has it been tested in a lab to see if it still functions after being dropped from 5,10 or 20 feet?

The flashlight has undergone numerous laboratory and “real world” tests. It survives repeated drops from multiple heights. The housing material is a high strength polymer that is highly resistant to impacts even at low temperatures. The housing material comes from the family of polycarbonates that bullet proof glass is made of.

Thanks Greg for your question!
